Miss Twist and Baso the Dog (Episode 2)

(If you haven't yet you can read here Episode 1)
(Vous trouverez ici l'Episode 1)

Miss Twist and her friends have been welcomed in but as they were about to sit down for a cup of tea, they were invited into the garden to be shown a new feature and she discreetly stayed behind...

I know what you are all wondering, yes of course they have a dog... But he is not at all frightening, he is called Basil or Baso... and he has had the marvelous idea of following them into the garden...

I can see him ambling in the alley. He is a kind of very large basset hound...
Il déambule dans l'allée. C'est une sorte de gros basset...

Miss Twist would love one of the cakes now and she wouldn't mind not staying here too long either as she can't wait to be at the seaside...

Oh, Basil is of course the first to return... Typical !* (read later, careful possible spoiler !)

Where has he gone now ? Où est-il passé maintenant ?

Oh, there he is ! Oh, le voilà !

Basil is giving Miss Twist his best Aren't I cute and lovely ? look...

But he is standing a little bit too close for comfort...

He seems interested in one of Miss Twist's roses... and gives it a good sniff...

Phew ! thinks Miss Twist, he has had enough now and is off at last...

But Basil stays around the table... He seems to have only one thing on his mind right now...

"Just a little taste", the dog seems to implore

And without any more hesitation, Basil conscientiously licks all the tops of the cakes... he seems to be well-versed in this practice...

He licks all the cakes... Il lèche tous les gâteaux...

literally all... L'ensemble du plat...

with no exception... ! Sans exception !

Miss Twist is flabbergasted...
Miss Twist est médusée...

What am I going to say to them ?! She feels a little bit panicky...
Que vais-je bien pouvoir leur dire ?! s'affole-t-elle

Good girl !, seems to be thinking the dog on his way out, She didn't seem to mind too much...

Ruined by their beloved pet ! Miss Twist is on the horns of a dilemma...

She doesn't have much time to think about the incident as her friends and their hosts are now all back from the garden in a jolly mood.
Would you like a cake Miss Twist ? ...

No thank you, muttered Miss Twist, too shy to elaborate more than this, I am actually not hungry at all... And the others tuck into their cakes...

Frankly, in my place, what would you have done or said ?...

Fortunately, it's now time at last to head to the beach...

*Strange things happen in strangers' houses... on an impromptu visit, Miss Twist once had to share the sofa with a Great Dane... Once again everyone had gone out of the room... She didn't even know there was a Great Dane in the flat, it just turned up huge and languid and sat down there staring at her... It only dribbled though... no cake licking tricks that time, fortunately...
